3 - Month Ceramics Residency
Open Call | EWRKS × Gertrude Ceramics Residency
EWRKS and Gertrude are inviting applications for two fully funded ceramic residencies, offering artists the time, space and community to develop a new body of small-scale ceramic work.
One residency will be awarded to a current Gertrude artist.
The second is an open call, welcoming applications from artists working with clay. In addition to the three-month residency at EWRKS, the selected artist will receive six months of free membership at Gertrude, extending the opportunity to connect with its wider creative community.
Both residencies are fully funded, and it's completely free to apply.

Who can apply?
This open call is open to artists at all stages of their career who are working with ceramics, with a particular focus on those interested in developing small-scale work.
Is there a fee to apply?
No. There is no cost to submit an application.
Is there a participation fee if selected?
No. Participation in the programme is free of charge.
Is accommodation provided?
No, accommodation is not provided. Artists are responsible for arranging their own housing for the duration of the opportunity.
Are materials included?
Clay and other materials are not included. Selected artists will be expected to purchase their own clay and any additional materials required for their work.
What kind of work can I make?
This opportunity is centred on the development of small-scale ceramic work. Applicants should consider how their proposal responds to this focus.
Can international Artists apply?
Yes international Artists can apply, thought it is not possible to support visas.
What facilities and firings are available?
The selected artist will have access to shared studio facilities, slab roller, extruder wheels. Firings to both 1000°C (bisque) and 1260°C (stoneware) are included as part of the programme. Firings to other temperatures are available at an addition cost. See members purchases.
How many works should I submit?
Applicants are typically asked to submit a small portfolio of recent work (please refer to the application guidelines for exact requirements).
Can I apply if I work in other mediums?
This opportunity is specifically focused on ceramics. Applicants should demonstrate a clear engagement with clay in their practice.
When will I hear back about my application?
All applicants will be notified of the outcome after the application deadline on the 31st of May 5pm. We will aim to notify all applicants of the out come by the 8th of June.

Current Artists in Residence
Bec Wonders My practice explores folklore, moral instruction and humour through sgraffito-decorated vessels that balance superstition and unease with playfulness and historical narrative.
Influenced by traditions of mimeograph and stencil-based print aesthetics, I explore how wit, warning and social commentary can translate into functional domestic ceramics.

Previous Artists in Residence
Layla Simner-Lock is a sculptor interested in objects of power and our attraction to them. Inspired by an obsession with weaponry, she began recreating weapons and tools in ceramics. By recreating these objects in “fragile” ceramic she aims to challenge perceptions of the material and invite the viewer to consider the object when it is removed from its violent or dynamic function.
Graduated from Central St Martins studying ceramic design, Layla lives and works in London.
Layla will be with us until the end of March 2024!

Olga Siruk born and raised in Russia, and now lives in the London. "My first profession was as a designer-architect, in which I actively worked for 10 years. This experience has significantly influenced my development as a ceramicist. In creating ceramics, I take a project-based approach, focusing on how my work interacts with the environment. Currently, I am extensively experimenting with underglaze techniques, creating my own engobes and underglaze paints, and working on my colour palette. By applying multiple layers of paint, I create depth in the images. While working with abstract drawings, I like to dissect images into rhythms, pauses, and melodies."
