Throwing the Korean Moon Jar: A Two Part Form Workshop with Soobin Lee

Join us for a special five day morning intensive with Soobin Lee, exploring the making of the traditional Korean moon jar, a form celebrated for its quiet beauty, balance, and subtle asymmetry. Created by joining two thrown halves, the moon jar is both technically challenging and deeply expressive.

This workshop is ideal for those with some throwing experience who are ready to develop their skills through working on larger, more refined forms, while gaining insight into Korean ceramic traditions.

What You’ll Explore

  • Learn to throw the two sections of the moon jar with control and sensitivity, focusing on achieving harmony between the forms.

  • Traditional Joining Techniques

  • Discover how to bring the two halves together seamlessly, honouring the methods used in Korean ceramics.

  • Refining the Form

  • Shape and adjust your piece to achieve the soft, rounded volume and natural asymmetry that defines the moon jar.

  • Aesthetic and Philosophy

  • Explore the cultural context of the Korean moon jar, considering ideas of simplicity, balance, and imperfection.

Throughout the workshop, Soobin will guide you with demonstrations, hands on support, and individual feedback. By the end, you will have created your own moon jar and developed a deeper understanding of both the technical and aesthetic approach behind this iconic form.
