Narrative Handbuilding with Punch: Chanakarn Semachai

Sunday 10 - 5pm (1 hour lunch)

23.08.2026

Step into a slower rhythm of making, where clay becomes language and your hands do the storytelling.

This is a narrative handbuilding class led by ceramic artist Chanakarn Semachai, designed for anyone interested in building sculptural or functional ceramics rooted in personal memory, observation, and imagination. With a focus on strict technical replication, the course invites you to develop pieces that carry meaning.

Focus Areas

  • Advanced coil, slab, and hybrid construction methods

  • Structural problem-solving for larger (30 - 50cm) and more complex forms

  • Narrative development through form, scale, and fragmentation

  • Sophisticated surface techniques: carving, layering, texture, and slip work

  • Integrating conceptual intent into finished sculptural or functional ceramics

Approach

Expect demonstrations that move into independent work, with emphasis on experimentation, precision, and feedback. You’ll be encouraged to push beyond decorative surface into cohesive sculptural storytelling.

For Whom

Designed for improver, intermediate to advanced makers with prior handbuilding experience who want to deepen technical control while strengthening conceptual clarity.

Outcome

You will leave with a more resolved and a more defined personal approach to narrative ceramics, where technique and idea operate as one. Works can be taken away at the greenware stage or fired in the studio or an additonal cost.

Our Level 3 Masterclasses are designed for confident beginners and improvers looking to deepen their practice. Working in small groups of up to 12, you’ll be surrounded by other dedicated makers — creating a focused, supportive environment where skills develop quickly.

These sessions are about refinement: improving consistency, strengthening technique, and working with greater intention. Expect a more considered pace, with time to repeat forms, troubleshoot challenges, and build confidence in your making.

With close guidance from our teachers and the energy of a shared studio, this is where your practice begins to feel more grounded, more deliberate — and more your own.

What to Bring

We're all about having fun and getting hands-on, so come prepared to dive into the world of clay! Wear something comfortable that you won’t mind getting a little clay on, and an apron is always a good idea if you are able to bring your own fantastic, if not - we have them at the studio. Short nails make working with clay easier, and if you’ve got long hair, tying it back will keep it out of your way.
